MEASURING EMFs
This section will cover what actions to take to ensure you are properly measuring the fields in your environment or even evaluating a product that claims to protect you. Unless you have the proper equipment and have been trained on how to use it, you will likely miss some of the fields. Therefore it is recommended that you hire a trained, certified professional.
Since fields are invisible and you have no idea of the source or if there are harmful fields in your environment, it is critical that all types of fields be measured. And that comprehensive measurements be taken around your entire environment. Unless you know you are already sensitive or you are in an older building with dated electrical systems, minimally you must measure for the following fields; AC electric, AC magnetic, radiowaves, microwaves.
If you believe you have sensitivities or have been diagnosed with EHS, we suggest you have everything measured by a certified professional. Even things like dirty electricity from home or business wiring or appliances may be providing harmful fields.
VARIOUS MEASUREMENT METHODS
Have you ever wondered what types of methods are best to measure not only the Electromagnetic fields and the products that are supposed to protect you from them? These are great questions because there are a wide range of methods out there by various types of professionals. We will cover two categories below; meters and alternative energetic testing tools.
CALIBRATED Meters
ALTERNATIVE ENERGETIC TESTING TOOLS
REpeatable, specific, scientific testing METHODS
The reason why we believe in using EMF meters over other other measuring methods for this specific purpose is that they can repeated consistently in the same environment over and over.
As we have stated elsewhere in this site, there are numerous types of fields, and no one device can measure the immense diversity and range of all fields. Therefore, the scientific community has developed different devices with extremely strong sensitivity to be able to measure the specific field strength of the field it was developed for.
Repeatable - If you took 100 different people and they were all trained to use a specific meter and they were all asked to measure a specific situation. They would all get the same results. Getting repeatable results is critical when measuring something as important as harmful EMFs. Would you want a higher guarantee that the measurement was accurate regardless of the person taking the measurement? We would.
Specific - Since each device can measure the specific field, is it more comforting that the consultant picked up lets say wireless radiation, can tell how much is being emitted and then after remediation can tell if it took care of the entire problem enough to put your household back into the safe zone. Or would you be OK with someone measuring saying there is some energy here and not being able to tell you what kind, how much or even how much it was reduced or if it is low enough to be safe or eliminated after you spent even more money to remediate the problem?
For the reason to have more certainty and a knowledge of the amount of value you are paying for various services, you may consider using a professional certified and trained to measure with meters.
INCONSISTENT, NON-SPECIFIC ENERGY TOOLS
There are dozens of wonderful energy healing practices such as those that leverage muscle testing (top left), dowsing or divining rods (bottom left) and pendulums (right) to detect energy in some way. While these methods when used in a pure spiritual context can bring much to the recipient and are a wonderful tool for the healer, they do not provide some of the things necessary for measuring EMFs.
Consistency - Those that extensively use these tools know that “pure” intent and the release of all outcomes can be the best way to use these tools. The challenge is that we are all human and completely susceptible to bias. Therefore these tools do not deliver consistent measurements in every situation because each individual is different and may be holding onto bias. One person may be able to successfully read something on one day, not another. Or one person may be more successful than another person in using these tools in general. Therefore in measuring EMFs it is best to use a tool that doesn’t matter the situation or person to ensure an accurate reading.
Scientists would also argue that the placebo effect may be at play with these tools. The mind itself is extremely powerful. yet one person may have a strong positive association and another a strong negative association and have different outcomes with no intervention to make one or another so.
Non-Specific - Each of these tools may be reading energy, or lack of energy. But what type and how much? The energy emitted from the body is often in the form of infrared. We generally are concerned with electric, magnetic, radiowaves and microwaves as it relates to environmental health. If these tools measure energy in general how can we understand what kind and what to do to protect from that kind?We also do not know to what degree. There are no specific measurements that tell us how small or how large the problem is.
Every individual has to rely on what is true for them. We just ask you to consider what would you do if you had the tools on the left and they told you something different than the ones on the right?
7 Reasons Measuring EMFs is complex and technical
The following reasons are why measuring EMFs can be complex and tricky.
Different Fields - Not all meters measure all fields. You need to understand which ones measure which fields.
Range Sensitivity - Different meters have different levels of sensitivity to capture the range. You may miss significant fields if you only measure with one device. For instance one device may measure radiowaves to a specific range and if you only use that device you will miss the fields with sensitivity to higher ranges. For instance, we use two different meters for radiowaves and one has a second setting to capture the higher range. Therefore we have three levels of sensitivity to make sure we are identifying anything in the environment. Meter one captures ranges up to 19.99 mW/m2, meter two captures 19.99 mW/m2 and above, but not below.
Sources - It’s one thing to understand if the fields exist. Its completely another to understand the source. Since electrosmog permeates the environment like a soup of thick fog, it is often difficult to access the specific direction or source. Some but not all meters will provide directional capabilities.
Technique - If you do not understand the specific techniques of how to use a meter then you may wind up getting false readings. Again each meter requires understanding the correct technique for the most accurate readings.
Measurement computations - Sometimes the meter you have computes in a different range and you need mathematical conversions to compare to the safe level standards. If you are not familiar with these difference there could be some interpretation errors.
Average readings vs peak - Some meters only measure average readings. Others measure the peak and yet others measure both. We like to measure both, especially if you are dealing with a pulsed technology.
Safe levels - Measuring is one thing but comparing to safe levels is something entirely different. If your meter isn’t sensitive enough to capture safe levels or you are not familiar with mathematical calculations to get a proper compare of your reading you may not be in the ball park of measuring for safe levels.
Pricing and why its cheaper to hire a trained professional
Net, net it is also more economical to hire someone to measure than doing it yourself. Depending on where you live, you may be able to hire a consultant for as low as $150 to measure a home environment. Helping consultants with floor plans or completed checklists in advance may lower prices as that reduces one to two efforts in the process for them, ask your consultant if they can work with you in this way.
Here is why it is cheaper to hire someone. As stated above you need the correct equipment. Even if you get a good deal and only measure the bare minimum you will need at least two meters. These can set you back at least $500-$600. Then you need to have training. Trust us. We have seen many people assume they can understand the instructions, watch YouTube videos and learn how to use the equipment, only to discover they have missed key fields that needed their attention. You need to be trained in the various fields, know how to run calculations from the measurements and understand the specific meter techniques needed to properly operate a meter. All of this is not supplied by the companies that sell the meter. At least not with the meter purchase alone. EMF Meter training courses start around $650. You can save on average almost $1200 by having a consultant measure for you. Note that this is only the measurement. It takes approximately 1 hour to measure an average home in the US, and that is if you can reduce the consultants time by providing floor plans and or questionnaires in advance. Note that it will take at least another 1-3 hours to prepare the full assessment and preliminary remediation plan. A DIY vs Measurement consultant price comparison chart is provided to the right.
