BIOLOGICAL IMPACTS

There are numerous biological impacts to our environment, the animals on our planet and to our own bodies. In this section we will cover the impact to all three with both the science of what happens and the biological outcomes.

LEADING AGENCIES AGREE THAT EMR IS HARMFUL TO HUMAN HEALTH

Here are a few leading authorities that have made statements that EMR produce harmful biological impacts:

The BioInitiative Report 2012 - Additional research and conclusions were made in 2014-2020. Twenty-nine scientists from over ten countries have deemed that low intensity electromagnetic radiation is harmful.

The World Health Organization - In 2011, classified radio-frequencies of electromagnetic fields as Class 2B possible carcinogenic. This is in the same class as lead and asbestos.

Council of Europe - Bans mobile phones and wireless networks in schools since these technologies have potentially harmful effects on humans.

National Toxicology Program - Determines that brain and heart tumors are associated with exposure to mobile phone radiation. Additionally the Ramazzini Institute later supports the cancer asscociation. (2016-2018)

International Agency for Research on Cancer - Also known as IARC, declares radio frequencies from mobile phones and cell towers are dangerous.

WHY EMFs ARE STILL ALLOWED IN THE US

There are several reasons why this is still not only allowed but proliferating.

1- No Single Responsible Government Agency in the US - This is covered in the Federal government’s role, elsewhere in this site. Basically, there is no one governing body in the United States that is solely responsible monitoring and managing the health impacts of EMFs.

2. Historical Impact Cycle and Research and Legal Bureaucracy - For any one harmful material exposed to the human population, it has taken two decades or more after the technolog has been launched or the material has been released to understand the impact. Then it must go through a period of time where there is enough prevalence and consistency for 100% of the people exposed to the technology of the material to be evaluated or diagnosed with direct causal link, in order for research to be financed. Then and only then will research be funded. Then the research must be published in journals. After publication, they must be peer reviewed. And only then is there enough of a case to bring it forth for legislation. Of course, then that takes time because if there is an industry that profits from the technology or other private interests, they will be lobbying for exactly the opposite and they too will fund research to prove that the impact either is not a direct cause or is minimal. It takes time to move through this cycle before it can get the attention of lawmakers and it can actually pass into law.

3- Commercial Interests - As sad as it is to admit, there are numerous stories of the commercial interests of various materials, substances and technologies that existed much longer than should have been allowed because the individuals and companies manufacturing these technologies and materials had a lot to lose by discontinuing production. As stated in #2 above, corporate interests will launch their own research. They will lobby, they will market differently and do whatever they can to hold onto their cash cows. Some examples of this are the tobacco companies who used doctors and even baseball players in the marketing for years to show that there were no harmful effects of tobacco. A few other industries include, the pesticide industry which clung onto DDT, or manufacturers of mercury, asbestos and lead based paint products who fought to keep shelves stocked with those products even though people were dying from them.

SPECIFICALLY HOW DO EMFs HARM OUR BIOLOGY

There are two specific ways that have been determined and well documented by two well know scientists.

DNA Strand Breaks - Published in 1995 by Dr. Henry Lai a scientist, researcher and Bioengineering Professor Emeritus at the University of Washington and Editor-in-chief of Electromagnetic Biology and Medicine.concluded that low-level microwave radiation caused DNA strand breaks in the brain after 30-45 minutes exposure. DNA damage if not repaired can lead to cellular mutations and even cancer. There are two reasons why this research is so significant. The first being it was the first study that could pinpoint exactly how EMFs impacted biology. Secondly, low-level electromagnetic fields were not previously thought to be harmful.

Activation of the Voltage Gated Calcium Channels Increases Free Radical Production - Discovered by Dr. Martin Pall, Professor Emeritus of Biochemistry and Basic Medical Sciences at Washington State University, V.oltage-Gated Calcium Channels or VGCCs are known to be stimulated by EMFs leading to increased intracellular Ca2+. Increased intracellular Ca2+, can have numerous downstream health effects.
